HOUSTON – Dr. Evan Collins of Houston Methodist Hospital, Department of Orthopaedics stepped forward as residents from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB- Galveston) scrambled to revive their residency program in the wake of Hurricane Ike.
Collins, a Weill Cornell assistant professor and former Chief of the Hand & Upper Extremity Department at Baylor College of Medicine, did not hesitate to work the residents of plastic surgery into his already intense schedule as one of the most sought after hand, wrist and elbow surgeons in Houston.
The move is not unusual for Collins, who was part of the orthopedic team assembled to treat badly injured workers returning from Iraq. Driven by a true passion, he has launched research studies into lasting, less invasive treatment options for some of today’s most debilitating hand, wrist and elbow conditions – which have received worldwide recognition. He is a true innovator and teacher of the common musculoskeletal conditions affecting small bones and joints, which he delights in sharing with the UTMB-Galveston medical students.
“There program cannot be interrupted. It would be an injustice to the students and the community in which they’re serving,” said Dr. Collins.
“We are pleased to work them into our program, helping them regain their footing and stay the course during the post Ike transition of UTMB. We do not know how long before everything is up and running again in Galveston, but we are prepared to provide support as long as they need it,” added Collins.
A member of the Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) and part of the Methodist orthopedic team serving as the official healthcare provider of the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo, Collins is featured among H Texas Magazine’s Super Docs and internationally renowned for his research and less invasive treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and other tendinopathies. Dr. Collins is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Medical Association (AMA), the Texas Society of Sports Medicine, the Texas Orthopaedic Association, and the Houston Orthopaedic Society.
